Is this a fungus on Dwarf Mulberry?

Hi all,

I bought a dwarf mulberry at the 28th Annual Mid-America Bonsai Exhibit.
And now that I am home the leaves seem to be turing black or dark brown.
Does anyone know if this is a fungus of some sort or what?
1-top of leaf
2-underside of same leaf

Thanks
-Paul

The only adviice I can give is to check with some members of the
bonsai club in which you belong. Also, do you have an agricultural
school or station near by? You could take the tree and/or leaves
in to them and get an opinion.

I have no idea, Pill Man gave great advice, but you also might consider the roots. Much of what we see in the leaves is a reflection of what's happening in the roots.

Is the tree drying out a little between waterings, can you tell? You haven't had it long enough to know it's habits. Does it have any new buds, and are they healthy or are they turning bad?

Also search the web using the keywords of " mulberry fungus" and see what comes up.

It seems strange that the tree came down "sick" so soon. Hmmmm.

midwestbonsai.
The picture of the leaf definitely does not show typical symptoms of a fungus diseases on leaves. They are too symetrically arranged on the leaf edges and look more like some sort of physiological stress that occured on the plant some time ago.
Wait and see if the new leaves carry the same symptoms. If not, it means that the stress is over.
Good luck.

Thanks all of you for the respoces.
I have found, possibally, something online as to what this might be.
http://www.ci.arlington.tx.us/park/...leafscorch.html

Bacterial Leaf Scorch, it might be it.

So in the web page it syas that I should be trimming off the effected leaves. My next question is, is it too late in the year to be trimming off leaves and branches?

Thanks again,
-Paul

Bacterial leaf scorch

I am not convinced that your leaf shows the typical symptoms of bacterial leaf scorch unless you have very early symptoms of the disease.
From the following link, it seems that bacterial scorch is much more severe causing browing and true scorching of the leaf edges.

http://www.usna.usda.gov/Research/B...LeafScorch.html

The only way to be sure is to have have a diagnostic of the disease from a plant pathology laboratory.

The above reference also says that it is difficult to cure this disease even when cutting infected branches because the bacteria are in the xylem vessels and could also be in symptomless parts of the plant. Antibiotics may help if given at early stages of infection, but this is still in experimental stages.

Well, ALDEVAUX I agree with you.
I have been trying to contact the person who I got the tree from Frank Mihalic of Wildwood Gardens. And so far he has refused to reply. I hope that he responds before the tree just up and dies.

Well they nursery finally got back to me and said that the discoloration of the leaves is probally from to much heat and stress.
Ithad lost all of its leaves, and has now leafed out very well.
