Friggin' Ficus Sap Suckin' Little Leeches?

My ficus has a sticky shiny substance on its leaves? Is it a sign of some malady?

No I don't want to know what else you refer to that way.

I don't think it's scale. I don't see any evidence of any parasite except the sticky substance on the leaves.

Aphids leave sticky little messes. If they are not on the Ficus, could it be dropping down from a larger tree above? I have sat on benches under trees that were covered in shiny, sticky insect pee.

I agree with davidzoo. the sticky substance is usually a sign of aphids. i'm in a battle with them my self over my fukien teas. insectacidal soap will do the trick. you will more than likely have to apply more than once. give the tree a blast of water with the hose first to knock as many of them of as you can first.

sorry i have forgotten how to spell insectacidal for some reason.
It's late and my meds have kicked in.

Scale

That is called honeydew and it can be from a scale infestation as well. Check the leaf stem and branches for leach looking things ( Brown/orange in color probably ). Also if this tree is anywhere near others quarentine it right away as the baby scale will travel ( and check the other trees you have). Adult scale are stationary mostly and have that hard shell. If you can pick them off then get too it. Use an insectiside designed for scale to kill the babies that are on the go. keep checking daily for any new ones and pick them off as well. I used Sevin on mine when it had it but Sevin is very strong and a weak tree will not like it.

Let us know what you find.

Scale have a fondness for ficus species and are a common inhabitant on newly acquired material. The sticky residue you are seeing IMO is from scale. Look for VERY small brown patches that may not even really look like bugs, on the stalks of leaves . . . I bet you will find them.

I have found that a weekly spraying of neem oil does very well at controlling the population. You will see a noticeable reduction in the amount of bugs after one application. Within a month they should be completely eradicated.
