Are Earth Worms Good?

Hello everybody,

A few weeks ago I started noticing that my neatly organized pebbles in my bonsai pot were covered with small mounds of dirt (as can be seen in one of the pictures). I suspected worm because the mounds looked exactly like the mounds often seen in lawns. So I leveled the small mounds to see if they would come back. The next day I could see a few new mounds. I tried to read about worms in bonsai pots but couldn’t find a good answer whether they are good or not. I’ve always heard that earth worms are doing a good job with roots and dirt. Just to get a good picture of the critter creating the mounds I thought I’d submerge my bonsai in water until the critter couldn’t take it anymore. After about 1 hour I saw two worms struggling to make up their mind to either stay or leave. Well, I pull both of them out and took a picture for everybody to enjoy. (Sorry about the background chosen)

Now to my question. Are these tiny worms good or bad for a bonsai tree?

Thanks you,
Robin

Worms are good at composting. The castings they leave behind are valued as a fertilizer by organic gardeners. Unfortunately for bonsai, they reduce the organic component of your soil into that fine silt, which can clog your drainage holes.

So you need to weigh the benefit against that risk.

Regards,

Matt

I've found that earthworms are best stir-fried with fresh vegetables and rice.

I would personally keep them out of my bonsai pots though.

Ah that is great to know...that they are best stir-fried

I've noticed a few more of those mounds of dirt so I'll soak the tree for 2 hours next time it needs water. I soaked it a full hour, but apparently that is not enough.

Thank Treebay and Erik,
Robin

I'm having this same problem right now, so i'm submerging to try to force the worm(s) out, they seem pretty dead set on staying though. It keeps peeking out and then going back in.

While it was submerging, I noticed some extremely tiny little white worms made it to the surface of the water. What are these? Is there anything I can do to kill them without having to soak the plant (soapy water spray? safe pesticide?)

THanks in advance for your help!!
