Dead Branches And Black Spots ?
Hi,
I've lost a couple of branches on one of my field maples. I noticed some black spots on the dead branches. Any ideae what they are ? Could it be related with some ants and some small black critters that I removed from the plant ? regards, René |

Gee. That does not look like scale to me but it might be a disease. What kind of maple? One thought that comes to mind is anthracnose. The twigs get cankers with that and those spots look like cankers to me. Can you rub or scratch them off? In other words, are they just on the surface or now part of the tree? If you can rub them off, it is not a canker. I think I would bring the tree to a garden center, bonsai club, or wherever you take things like this in The Netherlands. Lovely country, by the way.

Hi Moni,
Someone suggested that it was some kind of fungus. I have cut of the dead branches. The rest of the tree seems to be in good health. It's a bummer because now I will have to grow these branches from scratch. I'm letting the branches grow freely to gain thickness. This will cost me an extra year. It's an Acer Campestre ( field maple ) by the way. Thanks for the answer ! regards, René |

Rene, there are all kinds of fungal diseases. If your Springs are warm and wet like here in the Pacific Northwest, you get used to dealing with them. Just be sure to sterilize your pruners with each pruning cut.
