CBob,

It's all in the about location location location. Elms don't always drop leaves here in zone 10 in fall. They have to be stripped. I do it the day after Christmas and continue until all are finished or I collaspe.

The new buds will naturally force off the old leaves but by stripping we can see whats what with the tree and prune for shape etc.

One more Option

One other thing is Was the elm inside and when you took it out it started the new growth? If this is the case you probably took it out just in time because it was probably starting to die.
