Caterpiller ID?

Hello every body, I apologize now if this is a goofy question, but lately (the past 2 weeks or so) i have noticed a large amount of the caterpillars shown in this picture (sorry its blurry) but my question is, can this be identified as a moth or butterfly caterpillar? Is there any way of telling? I certainly keep them away from my trees but would like to keep a few butterflies around to. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I don't know what they are called, or what they turn into, but I do know that as a kid a learned to steer clear of those the hard way. They will leave fiberglass-like spines in your hand... those long things that look fluffy and soft? Yeah, not so much. They itch like hell.
