bugs in soil

Hiya,

I have tiny, tiny white bugs cawling around in my soil. When I water the plants they look like they are jumping. I have no idea what they are. I have read the description of different pests on the sides of some insectasides, but none seem to match. Anyone know what these might be?
Many thanks

Re: bugs in soil

Hi Blossom,

Sounds like they might be grubs or the larvae of beetles or flies. They tend to like damp environments where there is some decaying organic matter. They may well be harmless to your trees themselves, but they sometimes indicate that the soil moisture level is a bit too high. You also want to be sure that the soil surface isn't overrun by moss. About 50% is okay. Much more than that and you have the potential to develop some problems with low soil oxygen.

Grubs of different kinds are very common when you use organic fertilizer. Remove the spent fertilizer after a couple months at most.

You can also scrape and replace the upper bit of bonsai soil and renew it with some fresh soil to help deal with the problem.

Regards,

Matt
