Bugs (gnats)?
I have several ficus, elm and rosemary trees in my basement on a grow table. They have a flourescent light setup for them. I am getting a small flying bug, I would refer to as a gnat on these trees. They remind me of a fruitfly. I am careful not to overwater and all are in well draining soil. Does anyone know what these bugs might be. How can I get rid of them. They fly up from the soil surface when I water and seem to be increasing in number. Since these are indoors I am hesitant to use any type of insecticide. I do not see any sign of bugs on the plants themselves.
Thanks in advance for your reply. |

I know this won't be much help, but maybe put you to some ease. I have many herbs and other plants growing in my room, and there is always a number of these "gnats" or whatever flying about. They just sit on the soil. While normal flies are gross, these little guys just seem to be there. I am also interested in getting rid of them. They have been here for about 4 months or so, and have yet to cause any damage. Their population grew fast, but leveled off to about 15 or so.

I still think that your soil may be just a tad wet, even if you are careful with overwatering. Your soil may still be wet enough for them to lay their eggs. Try letting the soil get just a tad more drier than what you are doing now, and give the soil a mild spray of insecticide (safer soap is good). If you are seeing them, then they are still laying eggs. The trick is not to rid only the ones flying but to rid the ones in the eggs as well.

They sound like whiteflies, and they can cause some problems.

GNATS?
I used to have the same problem. I used a product called no pest strips, they work great. They kill just about anything. They are yellow strips and you can either hang them near or just lay them next to your trees. I used to use them for my snakes when they got mites but again I've had luck using them with my trees. I buy them at a local hardware store but you can also get them online, just do a keyword search of no pest strips. Hope this helps.
