Black Areas On Chineese Elm Leaves

Hello All

Very new to this Bonsai business and had a Chineese Elm bought me for Fathers day. It recently started developing black areas on some leaves as can be seen in the picture. Closest thing I can think of is Black spot desease on rose leaves (It is quite close to roses in my garden). It has been living out doors since I had it. Just wondering if anyone has seen this before and is it serious plus any comment on remedial action would be gratefull.

Thanks

Ive look two books about the black spot,

Ones simply refer to it in a chart saying that it appears in spring, it can be cured with some Benlate (Benomyl) or Captan product.

The other book, talk about the black spot disease being cause by small mushrooms and it says that elms are prone to this disease.
A general fungicide should be enough to remove the disease. If it comes back, use a product made from sulfur. They should have it at your local garden centre.

Chinese elms are very susceptible to a leaf spot caused by the fungus Stegophora ulmea. But the only way to be 100% sure of the diagnosis is to have the leaf checked in plant pathology laboratory where they can isolate the fungus and identify it.
In any case if the symptoms are similar to the ones shown in this reference : http://www.oznet.ksu.edu/path-ext/f...Elm%20Trees.asp you just have to follow the control measures they give to get rid of this disease.
Best of luck,
Alain.
