beneficial mycorrhizal fungi.

I noticed that my local organic nursery sells beneficial mycorrhizal fungi. I have also read that for oaks and maples grown in the soil this is a natural occuring organism that greatly helps in fighting disease and dertrimental fungi. Does anyone know if this can be used in pots for bonsai trees? Has anyone tried it?

I think you will find some info here

http://www.ip-sys.com/~bonsai/forum...ght=mycorrhizae

perhaps some more if you search here on mycorrhizae or in bonsaiTALK Links too.

Regards,

Matt

Thanks Matt, your earlier discussion on the topic answered my question on whether or not it can be sustained in Bonsai, and if it is beneficial. I did do a search in your links for "beneficial mycorrhizal fungi" and found nothing, but after your suggestion I searched "mycorrhizae " and found more. But it leaves me with one major burning question, and that is should I stop using anti- fungals such as neem (thats as strong as I will get), to protect the beneficial fungi. In yours or others experience, should we use anti-fungals, or should we promote mycorrhizae?

bonsaiTALK Links is just a keyword database. It has a lot of information specific to bonsai, but approach it in a general way.

the Ask Dr. Bonsai link on the startpage is more of a natural language processor, so it can filter from terms that are not meaningful to it.

In terms of what to do with trees. I don' t do a lot of proactive treatment because I believe it reduces the efficacy of treating trees that need it. With respect to mycorrhizae, I find the oaks, pines, cedar and spruce benefit quite a bit. I use organic fertilizer because it promotes colonization of the soil by beneficial microorganisms, and I frequently innoculate a newly transplanted pine with some hyphae-rich soil taken from another transplant.

There was some question in the literature as to whether healthy trees HAVE mycorrhizae, or mycorrhizae PROMOTES tree's health. In any case, it's there, the tree is happy and so am I.

Regards,

Matt.
