Banyan Bonsai problems

I have a Banyan Bonsai where some of the leaves are normal shape but turning yellow. You can still see some green but mostly yellow. Some of the green leaves look smaller and gathered (like with sewing). any ideas on what may be wrong with it?

If they are curling inwards at the main vein....it sounds like thrips.

The yellowing would be another problem.Could be not enough light, not enough water, too much water or just a change in environment.

Thrips

I found some pics of thrips and they don't curl inwards like that, just the sides of the leaves look bunched almost waved? Will post pics if I can.

Make sure that the growth tips are growing healthy. It could be an old leaf.Make sure you are feeding the plant.

Hello.

From your first 2 pics, I'd say inconsistent watering, for what it's worth.

Hi Misti,

Can us tell us where you are and where you have your fig growing? Have you recently bought it or recently changed its growing conditions? Is it inside - the curly leaves might be because of inadequate light. What happens to the curly leaves - do they yellow? As Andy said, yellowing (and eventual dropping) of leaves can happen to figs for several reasons. The good thing is that they have a remarkable ability to recover.

Banyan

Glad to hear about it being able to possibly recover. It is inside by a southern window. I have had it about a year and water every couple weeks or so. I have not fed it regularly but I did feed it this last weekend when I watered. Maybe I fed it too much? thats when I started noticing the leaves dropping. as far as what happens the the curled leaves not sure, I will watch them close and see.

What kind of soil is it in? When you water, does the water drain freely out the bottom almost as quickly as you pour it on?

It struck me odd that you water every "couple weeks". I have 7 banyans, the 4 in bonsai training are waterered as needed but never go more than 2-3 days. The others in larger grow pots go longer but still not more than about 5 days.

Treebeard55 suggested inconsistent watering, and I agree, it may be drying out too much then be overwatered for lack of drainage.

Mine are fertilized weekly spring-fall, then monthly during winter. They are happy with the light they get from southern windows, like yours. usually lack of light will result in dropping of green leaves.

soil

It is in Bonsai soil in a small pot and I dunk it for about 30 min and then when I lift it up it drains out the bottom. It has small rocks on the top. I watered it over the weekend, just checked and the top of the soil is still moist.
