Winner For The 2003 Critique Contest
Carl Bergstrom! Nice going Carl. You nailed every possible thing that Shinji said about my display. And.. there was alot wrong
You kind of nailed the Broom hackberry too if you had just shut up. You kept talking and contradicted your self as the post went on. You started out saying that the trunk was in perfect proportion for the tree, (which Shinji liked BTW) and went on in the critique to go into detail about ratio's and things like that. I was able to talk with Hideko and Shinji after the critique session and go into detail about some of the things he talked about in the session. This man knows what he likes and he was overall very foregiving of the trees in the display. As far as the stands in the display. Many of you commented about the lack of stands or that the stands were too small. I too felt that the displays could have benifitted from some additional space to make a more pleasing display. I think in the future we will do this on tables.

I almost forgot..Carl you will have to send me your address again. After the FBI raid last month, my address book was confiscated due to some seedy characters in there. It is being held without bail in Washington DC, and can only be retrieved with me divulging the source of contest materials given away here on the internet.
I will never tell, I took the fifth! Al Keppler

Al,
Thanks so much. This was another great contest, in that yet again it pushed me to push myself, this time mostly re-reading everything I could find about styling and dispaly. And yes, it was definitely humbling to read Shinji's critiques after writing mine. Mine seemed so...trivial, petty, irrelevent. But I sort of knew this would be the outcome. I really don't know enough to have any business critiquing these displays. I felt that I was veering into the territory of "bad advice, given without adequate (or any) justification," hence the disclaimer. Anyway, thanks for a fun and challenging (if sometimes humbling or even humiliating) contest. I'll PM you with the requested details. With my best regards, Carl
