Contest Scorepad

CONTEST!
Match wits with Shinji Suzuki, Japanese Bonsai Master.

Overview:
Shinji Suzuki, Headliner at the GSBF 2003 Convention, is a leading force in Japan today. One of the highlights of the show was the exhibit critique given by Shinji.

The Master prowled the room, going over each tree with his assistant. Notes were taken in preparation for the critique to be given the next day. Shinji chose 6 trees for his critique. The very six trees appear here in our contest.

The Contest I will post each of the six trees in a different thread.

Click here to see all six

To Enter:
Look at each of the six displays and provide your own critique of the trees. Put yourself into Shinji's shoes. What did Shinji have to say about each tree? Only I know... I recorded it!

Only post one critique for each tree, and make each post right in the thread with the display in it. At the end of the contest, the person who comes closest to getting their total critique to match Shinji's on the greatest number of the 6 trees will win. You can write as much as you want, but only the things that Shinji said will count towards your score.

We're going to try something new and we'll keep your entries in this forum secret until the contest ends. That means what you post won't appear immediately when it has been submitted. You'll see the thank you for posting message, but that's it! This will keep other people from leeching your critique.

The Term The contest will only run one week. The contest will close at midnight Friday Nov. 14th, when all the entries will be revealed. Scoring may take the judges a couple of days, depending on the number of entries.

The Prize An enamal pin given to me by Shinji Suzuki. These pins are sought after the world over. There was pin collector in the vendor room that offered me 25.00 for it. I happen to recieve two and will be glad to part with this one to the winner. Included in this prize pkg. will also be a hand made exotic hardwood custom planting stick.

Good luck,

Bonsai-al

This is the results of the contest. I tried to upload this into a thread but for some reason it would not load. I am placeing it here for you review.

The tree the pin is modeled after. Fairly nice example of the master's work

Ready?

On to the displays!

Contest Update:

The Shinji Suzuki Critique Contest's open entry period has ended as of Nov 15. We are now awaiting Contest Master Al Keppler's tallying of the scores, which should be completed in the next couple of days.

In the meantime, feel free to browse the various Displays where the individual critiques are now visible to all.

Please withhold any entry-specific comments, however, until the judging is complete.

Hope everyone had fun. It looks like most trees have 13-14 comments, which looks like a great response for a one-week period.

Matt

Yet another contest that forced me to push myself into uncertain - which is great for the learning process. I did feel that I was underqualified to be commenting in that much detail on trees that are in general very good, and that as a consequence I risked straying into the domain of what could easily be unfounded bad advice. Hence the disclaimer at the top of each my posts.

Thanks Al and Matt - that was fun!

-Carl
