Rocky Mountain collecting #2
Last week was my first rocky mountain collecting trip.....
http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/f61/my-...trip-25581.html Today was my second collecting trip - same site. Here are some of the trees. Most are lodgepole (one limber pine). I found one, lonely rocky moutain juniper today too, but alas, it was uncollectable. So far I've collected 16 trees - 14 lodgepole, and two limber pine. I scouted out another 10 or 12 trees for spring. I left the best of the trees I found in place. I want to make sure I understand lodgepole pine before I collect the best specimens. I want to see how successful I am with these first, and save the best for spring collecting. Perhaps I can persuade one of the more experienced locals to go with me when I collect the best trees. Brian

Brian, I have no doubts that you will master them quite well.

Couldn't find many of these in San Francisco or San Diego could you? Did you collect these in National Forest? Did you need to get a permit?
PS Did you take your bougainvilla with you to Colorado?

Barry, yes, these were collected in the Roosevelt National Forest, with permits ($10 per tree). And the bougie stayed in San Diego. Cheers Brian

I would really like to see a follow up on the lodgepole pines. After collecing many california junipers with a success rate of over 90%, I collected a few lodgepole pines (with permit of course) and had 100% failure. Used similar technique: plant in pure pumice, mist several times a day, ensure morning sun, etc.
The lodgepoles were collected in Oct, looked fine all winter, then failed to push new growth in the spring. All were dead by May. I suspect the long dormant period between collection and spring growth may have helped seal their fate. Also, the lodgepoles had less fine roots than the Junipers I normally collect so succesfully. Rich,
I'll keep you posted on their progress (if any). This is my first time collecting lodgepole pine, so all I can do is hope my experience is not the same as yours. They look great so far.....Brian

Well I certainly wish you success and I will look for your follow-up. Mine looked great for several months, then slowly declined the spring following collection.
Overall, I think that America offers some tremendous collecting sites/species, the lodgepole is one. Rich |

I promised Todd that I'd post some better pics of these trees....at least the ones that seem to be doing well. So, here they are. These are the smaller trees that are pushing new growth. By smaller, I mean ones I could pick up by myself. I'll get some of the larger ones posted soon.
