recently collected Mastich-tree (Pistacia lentiscus )
I have collected from nature Mastich tree week ago. It's domestic where I live in mediterranean climate. Most of crown is removed to increase survival possibilities. I don't shape tree at this point, but next year. I hope it would survive.
Does anyone have shaped mastic-tree bonsai? |

Hello Marija Hajdic, Just found one yesterday, in a plastic pot, in one of my local garden nurseries. Will repot mine today, using akadama, but will attempt to retain most of the present root ball intact. Plan to style into a semi-cascade or slanting style. Watering of this species seems to be very critical, and after having done various google searches find conflicting opinions, but opinion appears to be only once a month. Hope to hear from you on how your tree is progressing, and what your watering programme is? Can you supply a pic? Best regards....Nigel

Here it is on photo just after digging and transplanting in January... 50 cm high, trunk diameter: 16 cm
I don't like recepies like "twice a week",or "once a month". You have to observe the soil. These days I wather my bonsais regulary once a day... it is very hot! Also I wouldn't recomed transplanting on this heat. Do it before spring next year, or when this growing season ends. |

Well the weather has cooled down quite a bit over here in Amsterdam, so I'm gonna go ahead and do it anyway, I don't have the luxury of all your space [as I see in your very clear pic]. Has your tree developed a good head of foliage, as I understand that these trees are evergreen.
I repot out of season most times and usually [crossed fingers] have no problems, which I mark up to my use of 100% akadama, and also my balcony has a kind of micro-climate, where there are quite a few sub-tropicals, in fact trees from all over the world living quite happily side by side without ill-effect. Regards....Nigel

G'day Marija, Well my two trees have sailed right thru winter without any problems whatever, in fact both are putting out quite a lot of new growth already, I will post pics in about a week or so [I hope], alas, there is no way that I can get trees as mature as yours is over here in Holland. Best wishes, ozzerbon
