Recent Procurement - Oak

Hi,

I live in zone 7b.
This tree - I believe an oak.
Anyone know genus and species?
Also, how old is this tree? The bark is thick and tough - bleeding hands. Forgot the gloves.

I hope these photos are better than my other tree. My camera (or me) seems to be over it's hangover ... :-)

Trunk circumference is 6".
Tree height is 42"

I plan to create informal upright. The tree has good taper. I have some of the tap root but not all of it. Should I do additional pruning to the tree to compensate and leave root system as is to see if it lives?

Should I go ahead and remove all the leaves?

Should I wait until the end of February to remove the buds at the top of the tree and do pruning or do it now while dormat?

While looking at the tree I believe I know direction and which limbs should be removed to create my design. The trunk moves away fro the viewer and the apex after tapering moves toward the veiwer. I just am not sure if I should prune now or wait until the end of Februry to do the buds and branches. Help please.

BTW. I procured this tree on the side of a rocky slope with somewhat gritty soil. It appears to me mother natre has developed and I want to help from this point onwards.

As always your thoughts and comments for development, etc. are greatly appreciated.

The photos will go from the root system to the top. If you would like additional photos and where let me know.

Thanks,

V.

Yes the photos are MUCH clearer.

Are photos 1 and 2 the same tree? They don't look much alike. Photo 1 looks like the bottom of a trident. No corky bark like photos 2 & 3, which BTW has very interesting bark!

Looks like a great tree. Love the bark.

But to your questions. I assume you had to "chop the top to get it down to 42". Looking at the rot ball in picture 1, It looks like you have reduced it alot.

I think you plan is good and should work. I agree that putting it in a grow pot or larger nursery pot would be best for now. I would use Bonsai soil and add supper phosphate to it to help with root development. Then I would water with Supper Bloom (dilute mix) for the rest of the winter.

As for further reduction, I don't think any is needed if you did chop it to height as the pictures would lead me to believe. If not then do reduce the length and select the primary branches. You need to then just leave it until spring and see where the buds show up.

Looking fowrard to progress pictures.

I don't understand the relationship between the first two photos. An overall picture would certainly help...

Oh, I see you posted all the pictures out of sequence. Maybe we can put them back together

Cut everything off six inches above the broken branch and remove the huge root beneath the spot where the tree ground-layered itself.

Ultimately, the finish height of the bonsai may actually wind up somewhere in the second photo. The long straight portion has no interest and you'll probably need to regrow the primary branches, assumng it survives collection.

Regards,

Matt

Entire Tree - Oak

Hi,

Here is a photo of the entire tree.

The trunk is 6" circumference and 42" in height.

Any ideas on designing a bonsai?

The apex is not directly over the base of tree, however it is close.

Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

What style are you looking to creat? Broom, Semi-formal upright?

You have both options here. Either woulf look good with this species. But each will require a diffent approach at the top.

Since it is just collected. I would not worry about styles at this time but let the tree rest and bud out in the spring to insure that it has survived. By early summer you can sellect the style, reduce the branches, and cut back the top to fit the style you chose. But right now you need to let it recover from the root reduction.

Good luck!
