Update:

Good news = the trunk has survived and is pushing new growth

Bad news = only on the lower four inches

It appears that the tree decided to let the upper bits go and survive by pulling in. No green under bark above 4 inch mark. I now have a potential shohin.

ahh, the joys of collecting.

Nope, it's not siberian. I'm terribly upset at losing the long wiggly trunk and its gorgeous bark, wah, wah, wah!

I don't think it's ulmus americana either, I think the leaves are generally larger on U. Am. Could be slippery or red elm, or winged elm. Possibly rock elm. When there were branches on it, did they have wings of bark protruding from them?
