bonsaiTALK Hint: Did you know you can double click any bonsai term on this page for its definition?

I've been doing some collecting of them here, mostly in the spring when the snow is melted enough to allow access to them. I find them fairly easy to collect and pot them in 100% pumice to acclimate. I posted one this fall that I styled already under the title of "lodgepole literati" (I think)

Thanks Greg. I left several of the best trees I found in place, hoping to collect again in the spring. The site available was not open last spring due to heavy snow, and roads unpassable until June. Lots of snow again this year, so spring collecting may be out again. If so, at least I'll know if my fall-collected trees have a good survival rate before I try again.

Brian

Brian--I also collected a few late this summer and fall right up to mid-November and all are looking good. I have only been here 2 yrs., so will know this spring if the fall crop will bud. Locals have good luck fall and spring; it helps to have a little experience to bank on

It is much easier to collect pines than it was in Tucson, as the change in elevation is negligible. Imagine bringing trees that have never experienced triple-digit heat down to the desert and having over 100 days of 100* heat. You really have to be on your toes with watering, sun, wind, etc. The biggest problem here is too much rain in the winter when the trees are dormant.
