my first collection
hi all... was walking by the side of a wood where i live and there was some building going on...i then saw 3 english oak trees that looked perfect... so i asked the land owner if i could have the trees.. he kindly said yes but there was a problem...oaks have a long deep tap root ,and these oaks had quite big trunks witch=big tap roots
so while i was stood there thinking wot to do one of the work men came up to me and said do u need some help..i said yes but how and exsplaned to him about the big tap roots.. he said hold on i have just the thing..then he went and got a jcb digger..that was perfect we dug deep and cut of the tap roots and the bonus was that there were plenty of small roots still on the oaks. iv had these oaks for 4 months now and there doing great i also got a horthorn from the same place.. heres some pics of them let me know what u think. ![]() oak 1 and 2 and my orthorn in the ground Last edited by speedy : 2-Jun-2006 at 07:11 PM. |

Speedy, your soil might be a bit on the organic side... you might want to consider using some more inorganic material next time. You want the pot to drain well, so that the newly collected roots aren't sitting in water.
Nice trees, good job!! Joanie |

my soil for the oaks
thanks joanie for been helpful with the soil tip..but its just the top soil from the wood nere where i got the trees from ...under that is sand and graval...2 of the oaks are budding all over with some nice folige coming...but the short fat oak in blue pot is not doing so well ..so iv put it i the shade and it gets the morning sun...it has buds coming its just a waiting game...
