More collected material

It's a busy time for me tramping around the Ka'u desert sawing off the trees I've ground-layered beginning 6 months ago.
The dark wood is wet deadwood, white when dry.

Nice material you have there. You will have some great bonsai down the road. Are we looking at all the roots that have developed over the past six months or are we looking at the moss used for the ground layering? Do you have any issues bringing these to your home? What I mean is, are you in a different micro climate than where you collected these?

Rich, your looking at roots packed in moss, a tight bun. I go out and put on more moss 2 or 3 times as the roots get exposed. It's a harsh enviroment, the only living thing I ever see are Nene, the state bird. http://tinyurl.com/l3mgb And yet, 20 minutes away where I live is a cool pristine rainforest. So these trees think the're in heaven when they get here.

Bruce: These look like great collected trees...it is nice to learn about species other than those indigenous to our own climate zones.

Good luck with them and keep us posted.

Gday Bruce!

Brilliant! I particularly like the one in the first couple of photos - very Walter Pall-esque!

I have often wondered about the suitabulity of Metrosideros species for Bonsai culture... For some time, I have been eyeing off a gnarly old New Zealand Christmas Tree (Metrosideros excelsa) at a local gaden centre, with a view to turning it into Bonsai. So, maybe the next time I have some extra $$$...

Thanks, and keep us posted.

Fly.

Dear Bruce

The Ohi'A's look very good !
*38501* has a great trunck movement , such a sharp curve .
*38504 * has the leaves near the trunck , that"s a good thing .

Made a virt. for You .
with some work on the deadwood for elegance
and the massive trunk , with massive leaf composition.
The long branch on the left ,
reflect the roundness of the trunk.
OOOOHHHH..... dear Bruce ENJOY ---------->
those trees !!!
Big hug

Hi Bruce,

congratulations they are absolutely beautiful, especially the first one! I like the virt: but this is a conscience question to you will you (if you have already dissident off course) style it like a tree (someting like the virt) or go for a more natural look (if that is the right word?), but i think you know what i mean. I would go tree like bud i am curious what your thoughts are?
any way they are lovely!!!!!!!!
Hans.
