Rip,

By next spring the tub should be filled with small roots and a lot of these big ones can be reduced. I left more big roots than usual because I also left more branching than usual (usually a trunk chop on cypress) and the buds are about to pop. I don't know if this is the correct method, but it seems safer to leave more roots now and reduce next year. BTW, your postings on the importance of good roots has caused me to pay a lot more attention to this important part of bonsai. Thanks and keep on posting.

Jemmick,

Collecting season is almost over here. We had a mild winter and an early spring. Good luck collecting.

David

This was collected the trip before last, but I wanted to show the other end of spectrum for this collecting season. Sorry for the poor quality pic, but it was a long day and I just wanted to get it into a tub. (20 oz bottle for scale)

One more, in the tub. The knee may have to go since it's so far from the base. The roots are buried deep in the tub, so a lot of the flare is hidden but it will be exposed when potted.

Collecting

Here is a really WELL DONE!
I look forward to seeing how your trees develip this comming year. I am glad that you have gained some insight from the concepts that I try to teach. In early summer I am going to attempt to create a bald cypress forrest in a Ho Non Bao tray.
This is a large rectangle tray 24in. X36in. X2in. I will use medium sized trees that we have grown ourselves, it should be interesting to see the results.
