Last Trip Of The Season

Hello Everyone,

I went collecting cypress today. I only dug one and it's my favorite this season. This is the closest I've come to finding a tree to go straight into a pot and become instant bonsai. If I'd had the right pot, it would be, but the plastic tray will have to do for now. What do you think? This is before pruning.

Regards,

David

After a quick pruning. Sorry for the poor quality photo, but it was raining. I'll get a better shot later.

The tree is tall and slender, but the taper is continuous from soil to apex and has very nice movement throughout.

For you root fans out there. This is bare rooted bald cypress.

This is the last trip of the year for me. I've collected enough and the buds are about to open. What do you think of this tree?

Thanks

David

I really like it dave. It's a bit tall, but you're right, the trunk has nice movement and the roots are too good to just air layer off. Nice find, please post again when it's in leaf!

When you collect trees, do you dig a hole a certain diameter around the tree and just cut the roots with the shovel at that point, or what? I've never really collected and plan to, so tips would be great.

David,

I love it!

It reminds me very much of this Vaughn Banting bald cypress at the Pacific Rim collection:

(That's one of my favorite trees at the collection, by the way.)

Anyway, what about reducing the foliage so that even less of the top of the tree is devoted to branching, thereby bringing out the elegant sinuous trunk?

Terribly jealous,
OMC

Mittar,

We don't really dig cypress, We cut a circle with a hand saw around the diameter, then push the tree over to get at the tap root. Collecting doesn't get any easier.

OMC,

I had the same thought about Vaughn's tree when I saw this one a couple of weeks ago. BTW, I got to meet Vaughn a few weeks back and he had a photo album that included your favorite tree from collection until today. Now I know for sure that you're jealous. Vaughn is an incredible teacher and he had a lot to say about which direction cypress bonsai should be heading.

The health of the tree is the major concern right now. I've cut the dead twigging back to a live bud and will make more cuts after I've taken a good look. Hopefully it will bounce right back from the root reduction.

Thanks

David

Roots

I am very impresed. I think that you will find that the tree will produce new roots from the ends of the old cuts. This will probably lead you to reduce the heavy roots further in the future. You have an exelent opertunity to keep this tree in a very shallow container. Looking forward to future pictures. I am very glad for your success in collecting this year.
