I've got Crabs
My wife's Uncle died last December and she is executer of the will and estate. The house finally sold in this terrible housing drought and it will close on May 30th. I have been keeping up the yards since it has sat vacant.
Yesterday I went out for my usual cutting of the grass and cleaning the weeds from the cracks in the driveway. The Uncle was married to a Japanese woman and both of them were fairly well to do financially. They had the home landscaped by a pretty well known Japanese gardener and the tri level dry creek was flanked by a large row of crabapples. As I was weed whacking along the edge of the driveway I came upon a patch of weeds. The string took care of the patch pronto. I noticed that while the weeds flew so did some leaves. Hey wait a minute those were crabapple leaves. Why was there a shoot with crabapple leaves on it in this patch of weeds so far away from these large crabapple trees? On closer inspection I noticed two stumps that I had inadvertantly almost tripped over. They were buried beneath a clump of weeds and were there for many years. At least 10 and they had been either mowed over by his lawnmower or pruned back each year because of the close proximity of the driveway. I managed to find a shovel that had not been sold in the estate sell and was able to dig them up. I found a bathroom wastebasket and an old cast iron bean pot to put them while I drove home. This morning I was able to check them out and pot them up. They went into 8 inch clay bulb pans and were planted in 3/8 lava and sand mix 50/50. Time will tell if the bud and give me some shoots. I hope they do, they will be quite extrordinary if they make it. The blossoms are bright pink, Malus floribunda.
