I Think It's an Elm

Here's one I collected a year ago from a friend's cow pasture in early spring. Leaves look like elm. It had interesting lichens on it-not sure if that's good or bad, but I like them.

Since this picture was taken, it's put out lots of leaves and a few more secondary (?) branches. I'll try to get another picture...

Lichens won't harm the tree. They are not parasites, they just use the tree as a substrate to hang on to.

Definitely some potential in that trunk, whatever it is

Maybe it's Not an Elm?

Another bad quality of photo. Mebbe this isn't an elm after all-bark's too light?

I am using a cheap 35 mm camera.

Santa, won't cha buy me a mercedes benz (or a digital camera)

Absent a camera, if you have a document scanner, you could drop a couple leaves on it and probably come up with something useful for identification purposes.. I can't speculate on this one, but the focus was pretty darn good in the first photo you posted above, though, but there weren't many leaves then.

Good luck!

Matt

Greg; I have a fair quality 35 mm but it doesn't have any way to adjust the shutter speed. I've been having it put on cd at wal mart...
