Hawthorn Rescue

I know it is the worst time of year, in the south to collect trees, but there is a hawthorn that I would like to lift. It is where we are building a new road, so if I don't get it the bull dozers will. I know I have to reduce the trees transpiration, but I haven't decided which way is best. Should I cut it back to the stump and let it back bud, or should I leave a few limbs on and defoliate them, so the tree has budds that it has already set to fall back on? I know its late to defoliate a tree, but if I protect it, I figure I can extend its growing season to Nov? I think I am going to get it Sat. I just wanted to hear from someone who has lifted trees this time before and had luck at it. Thanks in advance.

do as little to the roots as you can if you have to take it now. Basically dig so far around it that you dont even touch the roots. Then either put it back in the ground or a large grow box and cross your fingers.
Good luck

In my experience hawthorns are pretty tough trees. I collected one in mid-summer of last year and it is doing fine. If it is going to be destroyed you might as well take it. As for after care, i would remove some of the foliage and put it in a sheltered spot, watering it whenever the soil begins to gets dry. Don't be alarmed if it loses some or all of its leaves- one of the hardest lessons I learned was not to fiddle with thing like this. Good luck.
