Going on group digs?
The Golden State Bonsai fall show looks like it is offering one or two digs..."100 years old grape vines" and "olive stumps". But I can't find any more information than that, at this point. I've never been to a Bonsai show yet, let alone one of these big conventions.
How much do these trips generally cost? Do you have to drive your own car? If you are not a big strong fellow, will someone help you with the heavy work? Do you bring your own tools? Will the tree last for the extra day or two that it takes to finish the convention and go home? Any pointers that might increase success, other than general collecting information? Maybe there is a link somewhere with information, can someone please point to it? Can hardly contain my excitement! Joanie, whose dreams now include shovels and moss.... |

Hi Joanie!
I can't help with all of your questions but I believe I can point you to an answer of one of them. Bonsaial wrote a wonderful article that can be found here

Thank you, JP! I had already read that article, but had forgotten that he said that the tree could possibly live a week in the moss. That's reassuring!!
What are people's experiences with these group digs? Joanie |

Joanie,
YOU are on fire! The conventions are fun. I am sure you have been here but for everyone lurking... http://www.gsbf-bonsai.org/Conventi..._highlights.htm If you are wanting a grape, There is a guy about 5 moles from you that specializes in Bonsai grapes most 100 old or so. YOu will meet him at San pu Kai if you come, I will introduce you to him. You could go digging in his backyard--laugh

I am so anxious to meet you at San Pu Kai on Tuesday, Nut!! It's going to be a blast!! And we get to play in clay, too? Holy Cow, I can hardly wait!
Do you have any information or advice other than what is on the website for the Golden State digs? Perhaps some insights from past digs? There must be other people here contemplating going on one of these organized digs for the first time.... Joanie |

Boy, that convention is going to be fun. And I only have to drive 1/2 hour.
Those olive stumps are usually huge. Joanie, you'll need one of those belts that weightlifters wear... plus a chainsaw (that one you can probably borrow from someone else). And yes, you need your own tools (unless Bonsainut wants to carry them for you). The cost of these digs is very little, never more than 20 bucks because you have to do all the heavy work and you may not even find anything you want, so they can't charge too much. |

Oooh if the stumps are huge, I guess I'll have to bring some brawn along. My son is 16 years old and six feet tall, he can come and help his mom. He works for food....
So you've been to one, Attila?? Any helpful hints.... any good advice? Aside from common sense.... anyone else thinking about going? Which one would you choose? Joanie, full of questions and good Indian food.... |

The grapes are probably much more interesting though. I may go for that one. Those old gnarly trunks are really something. |
