First pot for a collected juniper
This pot was aquired at last years Shohin Convention. It was bought for a specific tree. Today I repotted the tree from it's growing box and into this pot. Below is a first shot showing one view for a front. I did not like this view since the tree leans back and the orintation of the branches was bad. It was not too bad just not the best choice.
My choices were fairly limited since the side views were very narrow and did not show the trunk to the best advantage. The second shot shows what I have picked as a front. I think it takes adavntage of the largest combination of desireable attributes of this particular piece of stock. The third shot shows the business end and the progress in the root dept. This tree was basicly a cutting when I stuck it in the grow box. It went into almost pure sand and did quite well in the medium. I tied the tree in and made sure it was solid with the trunk test. If I can't pick it up by the trunk then I redo the whole thing till its solid. This is a final shot of the tree in its new pot. It has had absolutely no training whatsoever. The only branches that have been cut are those that were cut in the desert on the day of digging. My future plans will be to wire it out in the spring and to start carving next fall. (I have never been to high on patience so be prepared to see updates as I find this plant will take additional trauma as the season progress.)

In two dimensions, I think I like 43096, the first picture better as a front, but considering the limits of my perspective, I'm sure you are making the better choice in reality

I really like that one. It has a lot of potential.

Gee, Al, I dunno about that pot. It's rather shallow for the bulk of the tree's trunk. This one is too "namby pamby" and formal (look at those cute widdle feet)
for such a grizzly of a juniper...A deeper and darker, less wide and less formal pot might be a better choice. |
