Finally went collecting yesterday in Prescott

So I have been doing some reaserch on collecting ponderosa pine in the prescott and flagstaff area for past year. I finally found out that you can get Wildings permits threw the Forest service for a small fee.

So I went out yesterday, purchased my permit and then went off for a few hours and did some scouting. I found 4 poderosa that I liked. Spent the next few hours digging them up. I think that three will have a good chance of survival because they had alot of feeder roots, while the last one did not. Oh and I did take my camera but forgot to charge it the night before "idiot"...

I used these guys as training, There are several trees that I found near the grand canyon (in the National Forest, out of the Park bounds) that just amazed me when I spotted them.

Wish me luck

Good luck. Don't forget to charge the camera. Look forward to seeing pictures.

I have always thought the best time of year for collecting was during dormant season, roughly between Halloween, and St.Patrick's Day,otherwise you would promote shock. But this article http://www.bonsai-wbff.org/nabf/new.../collecting.htm also suggests late spring/early summer. Why is this ?

I really dont know. but the forest service suggested anytime other than late may to mid september. However I cant get my permit for flagstaff until may 1st, and its only good for that one month. Then agian for one month in october.

Collection time depends greatly on the location and the species being collected.

Pines can be collected later in the year--in general than deciduous trees.

Knowing when and how to collect different species takes some experience. The books, other than Nick Lenz' book, gloss over alot of information and deal in generalities or outright falsehoods. There is some leeway in how and when to collect trees, you just have to know where that leeway is and how to use it.

For instance, I've collected Carolina Hornbeam as late as June, when they're in full leaf. Once leaves harden off on SOME decidous species AROUND HERE, they can be dug pretty safely.

This probably the worst time to collect pines for someone who
lives in the Valley. You are asking to re-root/survive at the same
time you asking the plant to face the Valley heat. Sunlight will
not be the problem - heat. I/We usually collect in the Oct/Nov
time frame or Feb/early March. Gives the plant a chance to
start to rebuild before be blasted with HEAT

well i hope they will do fine. I will keep my fingers crossed. I have dumb luck, I have plants at my house (not bonsai) that everyone in their mother said will not survive one month in the valley, but for some reason they do.

Where do you normally go collecting azcelt?
