Ditches?

there's always that good looking tree you pass on the road everyday....you know the one. i know i've got a few i've had my eye on for quite some time. does anybody know who one could go to to get permission to dig trees from ditches? i've done it twice with no permission, cuz i'm not sure if anyone cares around here. once under cloak of night, and once under.....blanket...of...day.... the latter involved running full speed through the ditch with a large juniper in hand at the sight of an oncoming vehicle.

Most likely nobody does care but it's best to get get permission anyway. Drainage ditches are a bit tricky. Most times the property owners will actually own the land but there will be an easement several feet wide that allows for the governing body and utilitiy companies to get in there to do what they need to do. It depends who owns the road and maintains it. It could be a city road or a county road or a state highway. Don't bother with interstates you would never get permission from the feds. I would start by asking the property owner. If it's fine with them and you're not harming any government or utility property you should be in the clear. If in question locate the authority that maintains roadway.
