Cypress Stumps

Just wanted to start a thread showing some of the cypress stumps I have been getting this year. This is the only one I have a picture of so far. I'll get the rest up over the next few days. Look at the size of this monster 12 inch trunk !

Sorry about the shadow, but the sun went behind clouds just after taking this picture.

Nice trunk. Good taper too. I've heard you could cut the roots back that hard and they'll grow right back but I never have worked with it myself. Do you think you can tilt the planting angle enough or find a front to make a formal upright?

Thanks,
I haven't even had time to think about any definate path this tree is going to take. I had been planning on digging these trees since last year. But of course, my boss has decided I should be working 55 hours a week lately, so its all I can do to find time to dig them. I'll have some better ones to show you guys real soon.

The roots on these things are amazing from a bonsai standpoint. You can find a tree 15 feet tall and it will be loaded with fiberous roots within a foot of the trunk.

Here are a few more I have collected. I plan on getting a couple more tomorrow. This first one has a trunk of about 14 inches. It is a far more magnificent tree in person. I will probably take a picture tomorrow from a better angle to show this sweet trunk.

This one looks like a shrimp next to the last two, but it still has a trunk of a bout 6 inhes across. I think I can give this one a pot by next spring

I would recommend potting in a nice deep pot with plenty of soil over that root base and not rushing it into a bonsai pot for two years.

I'm working on a piece right now that will show you the result of material such as this that is handled incorrectly when collected...

I'll post it here in about a week, then you can decide for yourself!

Does anyone else think that their trunks look like sequoias ?
Should be great after some work !
Could you show us the whole tree ?

Closely related to sequoias... You're looking at about the whole tree... ;^)

You basically collect a big "cutting"...
