Doubtful you will get permission to do so, but each park has their own Ranger, usually. Find out where their office is and ask. The worst thing is they will say no, but at least ya asked.

If they do say yes, they will issue a permit for a set number of trees you can remove, and this will cost you...dependent on said number and the discretion of said Ranger.

I have collected from city parks, with permission. I only had to ask. And was given a set of basic rules... like no trees from trailsides, public areas (near swings, picnic areas etc) but they would go over that......

its still illegal to take tree's from the mountains, only place you can take em from whithout permission is your own private property.

Yeah, really now, even if a ranger might catch you, what will you get, a fee maximum. I haven't heard of going to prison for stealing a tree from the nature

As far as I know, you can collect on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) and Nat'l Forest Service lands if you contact them beforehand. They issue a special permit which varies in cost. I went on a collection set up by a local master last fall and scheduled again for this October, and we're doing Nat'l Forst lands only.

Contact your local forest service to see if they do any of these in Mass. Good luck!.

first, thank you all for your replies. i actually called and spoke with a state ranger today on pauls advice and the gentlemen i spoke to was more than kind and granted me permission to collect in his park. we had a nice conversation about the types of trees i would be interested in, he did set a size limit but no matter, and he was very interested himself in the fact that they would be used for bonsai. almost all the mountains in this area are protected in some way as are the forest parks, which is why i chose the legal way and believe it or not, the park i am heading off to after typing this post was the first one i called. i'll post pics of the collected trees after my return when i have gotten them into nursery pots. thanks again all.
