Jack Pine Collecting Pictures
As most of you know I just spent a week in the woods last month on some land I purchased long ago. I spent the time bow hunting and spading some trees I will be collecting in the spring. I also found some new trees that I carefully marked into my GPS for future retrieval.
The first picture is a common view on the land, all pines, larches, oaks, hemlocks, and birch. The second is of some of the jack pines that grow heavy there. The third, a close up of some jack pine bark. The forth, visitors outside the back deck of the cabin, enjoying a free meal from the apple tree. Lastly is one of the jack pines I will take out of the ground this upcoming spring. Last fall I spaded halfway around them with a sharp shovel angling towards the trunk and cut the main upright trunk off about 5' above the ground on this one (slightly above the picture). Last month I spaded the other side. You can see the natural cascade coming off to the right at ground level. I'll lift this one out and put it into a grow box. I have about 8 of these twisted jack pines ready to be removed; I think I’ll have a busy year. Patience has paid off so far! Will Last edited by Will Heath : 17-Nov-2004 at 12:13 AM. |

I'm thinking about leaving about 2 foot of that main trunk on above where the bend in the cascade starts and carve it into a dead wood shaping. Any thoughts on this? Or maybe I should just cut the main trunk flush when I left it this spring?

Wow! Look at the difference in the coloring on those animals.

Strange thing here in the boreal forests of Michigan, the does seem to have a grayish coloring and the bucks more of a brown, but not always. I like to walk in an area called "Dead Mans Swamp" (so called because many have gone in, a few less have come out) and the deer there are almost black in color, very unsual for whitetail deer. As a side note, most deer are expert pruners and do a good job keeping foliage low and compact, lol. Will |

Will,
I believe that you may have found something very, very interesting in that pine. Best of luck with it. Regards, Fish.

This weekend we decided to take a trip up to the cabin and de-winterize the place in anticipation for the upcoming season. It turned out to be a weekend made in heaven as the temperature was in the 40's yet there was still 18 inches of snow up there.
We invited some friends and broke out the snowmobiles and headed for the woods, which up north here in Michigan are virtually undeveloped. We hit an area that the DNR has recently clear cut for burning. We found a real nice hill and did some sledding. Needless to say, I kept my eyes on the trees.
