Collecting Trip

I went collecting again today. It was blue skies and temps in the fifties (F). After reading some of the comments on the swamp maple thread about new ways of seeing our native species, it got me in the mood to dig a couple of our native pines. I'm pretty sure they are loblolly. They are growing in an old gravel pit, and are regularly pruned by beavers. Here's a series of photos of one of the trees (not the best one in my opinion). Before pruning.

After pruning. My assistant does not look too impressed at this point.

The bottom of the roots. It looks like it had been growing in a pot for ten years. Perfectly flat.

Thanks David. I did enjoy them. Did you only collect the one tree?

I collected two loblollies. I also scouted several more loblolly and shortleaf pines for next trip. The shortleaf pines have, guess what, shorter needles, but the trunks and bark aren't as nice. Here's a picture of both species side by side, with the two I collected in the wheelbarrow.

David,
Looks great to me,esp. the one you showed of the nebari ,even though I am unfamiliar w/ either species you mentioned.Sometimes I envy you guys that get to collect so early but I do like the change of seasons. All of my scouted trees are under 2 1/2 ft. of snow(thats a lot of diggin').Thanks for posting just to wet my appitite.
Regards,
Jonathan
