stp,
Collecting anything bigger than a seeding isn't the easiest matter in the world. I'd strongly recommend that before you dive into the collecting process, you get super-good at keeping regular nursery-bought material alive. Otherwise you'll just be destroying good material and wasting your time. Have you been working with pines for a few years? If not, I'd wait. If you' had a few years of growing experience with these pines, then it might be time to start learning how to collect wild material. That said, while waiting and if you don't want to buy material from a nursery, try collecting seedlings in the spring. With those, you can dig the whole thing up. Try to keep them alive for a couple of years. Find out what works best for the species of interest. Bare-rooting and moving into large-grained bonsai soil? Leaving some of the initial soil around the roots? Cutting the taproot? Leaving the taproot? Etc. Best regards, OMC
