Collecting?? Safety Tips: How to avoid a ZAP!
Safety Tips: How to Avoid a Zap
During particularly wicked storms, try to get in a low-lying area and make yourself as small as possible. It's good to be near an area where trees are growing, but not close to a lone tree, which is more likely to get hit. Always move to the lowest area. Full story from the Salt Lake Tribune

I don't know about anybody else, but why would you be out there collecting trees in a wicked storm?
I think I would be in my recliner, sipping a martini, watching the storm while looking out the windows overlooking the beautiful Klamath Basin! |

Good point. Some of who collect in the Sierras and deserts can get caught in weather on extended trips, where you sometimes need to pack in and out.
Of course, if you can predict it, avoiding adverse weather would be the way to go. Save a martini for me and make it extra dry! Regards, Matt

avoid the zap
Earl has the right Idea although for me it would have to be a diet soda.
Matt your tip is correct. The only problem is that lightning is nature's crap shoot. I have seen a documented case of a woman that was hit by lightning from a thunder cloud estimated to be over 10 miles away. She felt safe under a cloudless sky and so continued jogging. ZAP!!! she won the crap shoot. She did survive but barely.

I'm thinking that this could be a design element. Place tree in rainstorm. Gather jumper cables and place one end on apex of tree. Clip other end of jumper cables to right index finger. Hold left index finger high in the air. When lightning bolt hits it will go through the body and cause no harm, while shattering the apex of said tree. Voila, instant lightning induced jin apex.
Be sure to apply lime sulpher when dry. You may want to have a cell phone with 911 in the bucket, just in case! |
