Collecting Privet

Hi All, this weekend I have the opportunity to collect a 10-15 year old Privet hedge. Its about 4ft high and 3ft wide trimmed into a rectangular shape over the year. This lady is basically allowing people to come dig up whatever they want from an overgrown yard (she might also have an old hibiscus for me). Nobody wants the privet and its right in the spot where she wants to put a new hot tub. So its now or never, what I'm wondering though is if this is the right time for transplanting. What are the chances of survival? I'm thinking that I need to take as much soil and roots as possible and leave all branches in tact (hopefully it fits in the van!!). In terms of soil I'm pondering a 50 - 50 inorganic/organic mix in a really big pot for a few years (to accomodate airlayers, trunk chop etc).

If you have absolutely no choice Eddie go for it. Take plenty of rootball + soil privet can be pretty tough if you lose some root trim the top growth a bit. At this stage get it into a growing box using any old cheap old potting mix into the shade, water and pray. Good luck Ash

Eddie.. the privet is extremely durable . I have collected them this time of year here in Va Beach and had no problem with little to no feeder roots and same on top end. Give it a shot of sun in the am and dappled during the day..
Depending on age of hedge you may have some nice nebari in there.. fused trunks, etc. enjoy...

peace,
tom stoute

I have the same experience as Tom. Collect them even in summer. Just use a bit of protection for a month or so after collecting as suggested. You should have no problem.
