I think Jim was being nice!

What other advice would you give?

Oaks can run damn deep, and they can get cranky about having their taproots snipped. So by all means, dig deeper.

Or go plant an acorn.

All the best,
Old Mister

The acorn?

Sure, why not?

Plant a few dozen.

I've got a half-dozen coastal live oak grown from acorn...

I plant oaks every year. There are several that do well for bonsai. If you grow from seed you have a better chance of ending up with something that you will like. Cork oak is an exelent candidate. The california live oak is another, golden cup oak make exelent bonsai. You like shohin so growing from seed is not that difficult. Here is a trick for you, collect your acorns then place about one cup of seeds in a freezer bag with two table spoons of water, seal the bag and place in a dark place like a drawer. Check the bag every week until the tap roots are showing real good then plant into a growing box or prepaired bed. You will have more oaks than you can deal with.

Sincerely

I you collect it now you'll want to keep the roots from freezing over winter. Spring is the best time to collect.
