Collecting Cornus Alba
Hi,
I want to collect a Cornus Alba from outside and I was wondering if I can do it now or I should wait until spring. I read that some species of trees can be collected before winter with success. Any comments? Al the best, Richy |

I have at least five different species of cornus (none of them is cornus alba), they are very easy to transplant and easy to establish.
So, if you save enough feeder roots (the very thin ones), the tree will have a good chance to survive. Not as good as in the spring, but a fair chance. If you have to do it, I would do it now. In Cluj the month of September is warm enough that there will be some root growth before it goes dormant. Cornus alba has a strong suckering habit (=juvenile growth from the base of the trunk). There is a chance that the whole trunk dies back and new shoots will grow from the base next year (by the way, to avoid the die-back, you should keep the trunk and cut off all the growth coming from its base). So, you have to ask yourself it you really have to dig it out before spring. There is no real gain in transplanting it now and going through the trouble of overwintering. Unless for some reason you won't have a chance to do it next year. Regards, Attila Last edited by Attila : 14-Sep-2004 at 01:02 PM. |
