Question Collecting Bald Cypress In Central Florida...

I know there's a few Floridians that frequent this board, so I'm wondering if any of you know of how I would find an area to collect trees (namely Bald Cypress) from. It seems like the only "ethical" way of doing it is by just happening to know someone who doesn't mind you digging up a few trees from their enormous expanse of land. Since I know this is a pretty rare situation, there must be some other way I could do it, without committing a crime. Of course, the other possibility is that collecting is done with a sort of "they'll never miss this one little tree" attitude, where one sneaks onto the back-end of some state land and digs up a couple beauties. Technically, this is stealing, so I'm hesitant to go out and do it. My only other option is to keep browsing the Flyer in the hopes of seeing a little add that says "1 Bald Cypress - FREE - you dig". But let's face it, I probably won't ever see that, so PLEASE give me some advice in this area!

THANKS

Josh

all you have to do is ask, unless the people are into bonsai or plants, im sure most wouldnt ming you getting may one or two, as long as you make the hole as small as possible, and FILL IT BACK IN

Good Idea to be hesitant digging a cypress on state land. You do realize it is a protected tree in Florida. If some eco-nutty ranger finds you , you'll be in deep ______. ( you also don't know who else reads this PUBLIC forum)
It's this reason that the laws concerning state and fedaral parks keep getting more and more stringent. That just makes it harder for everyone to really relax and have a good time. and then you go and give bonsai a bad name cause people think they are stolen form a state park. And it is in a state park and without people stealing the trees, they're supposed to be there forever.

Also being as you live in florida, you must see the constant destruction and clearing of the land to make way for new devlopments(homes, shoppong, etc.)
The much better thing is to dig trees from those areas, most times, if you just ask the project manager, he'll(or her) will usually let you dig all you want. Sometimes this will backfire and they'll say something about insurance and liability(which I understand) and tell you to scram. It's for that reason that we have saturday and sunday. Rarly IME have I seen workers on a weekend clearing land.
Then you can have a positive look, instead of stealing a tree, you'll have saved one!

I should also add that this is the best time of year to collect a cypress, cause they should still be dormant and the land clearing is going on full time, taking advantage of this nice weather. Go out to some commercial property that is gonna be cleared soon and dig away . That's my $.02, have fun.

Finding some that will be destroyed by development is a good idea - but ask permission anyway. It's the right thing to do, and the only way to be sure to stay out of trouble.
