Collected Rhododendron

Hi all,

A few weeks ago I dug up this very nice rhododendron. I cut the roots with a sharp spade last year so the rootbal was very compact. I had it out of the ground in 15 minutes :

Re: Collected Rhododendron

This was the only way it would fit in my car... It's in alarge plastic container now and already budding and leafing so it must be feeling ok.
Opinions and virtuals are welcome...

gr. René

Bonsai is going to start getting expensive because you will be buying a truck before long to haul you collected trees in!! LOL Looks like a great tree.

Re: Collected Rhododendron

Earl,

You don't want to know what trees I transported in this car.... and how it looks afterwards . I'm very fortunate to drive a company car.. pity my boss won't let me lease a truck...

Re: Collected Rhododendron

nice one rene,
I have a chance to collect a fairly large rhodo,
I am going to prune it to a collectable shape
and size this summer, (and dig around the roots)
then hopefully next spring it will be lifted.
or should I not prune it til the last thing?
perhaps you could keep us posted on your progress
I for one would be very interested to see how it
developes.
I got a truck for work, very useful family utility
at weekends! it helps to have a good boss!

Re: Collected Rhododendron

I have found the smaller convertible makes an excellent transport for collected trees due to its unlimited headroom.

Re: Collected Rhododendron

Rick,

I pruned this rhodo very hard in the year before I lifted it. I did this around september. The plant was a mess of branches and I cut them all off to the shape you see on the pictures. It was standing in my mother-in-law's campsite garden and she was convinced I had killed it ... I also cut the roots with a sharp spade in a circle around it on about 40 cm distance from the trunk. When I checked it this year it was pushing buds allover. The lifting was very easy because the rootball was very compact and not very deep. Like I said it is in a large plastic container in front of my house and is making new leaves allover. You're lucky to own a truck. That's great for this kind of work. Good luck with your rhodo and keep us posted !

Matt,

Convertibles are great but not in our climate....

regards, René

Re: Collected Rhododendron

The branches have an interesting panhandle shape to them.

It might be possible to use that to an advantage. If you were to air layer above the first branch, you would have the start of a cascade, or perhaps two cascades.

Regards,

Matt
