Cautions On Purchasing Collected Material
Just a cautionary tale.
Given the amount of "collected" material available on the internet these days, I thought you might like to see this "road block" picture as an indication of "inbuilt life". Some people have been known just to dig-up a tree - pot it and let the current seasons growth indicate that it is in growing health and established. This is not necessarily so ! The larger the tree - the more stored energy is held within its structure and any reputable dealer will keep lifted "yamadori" material for at least 2 seasons - before putting it on sale. This then assures that fresh roots have been generated by the tree and it has truly "established" itself in its new pot bound environment. The simple rule is "buyer beware" so unless you have collected it yourself, trust the source from previous experience or recommendation, then try at least to inspect the root ball (without major disturbance) and look for the signs of new root growth. This particular "tree" (local to me) has been in position for about 18 months - and certainly has NO ROOT SYSTEM, yet look at all this springs growth. |

Is that a big, old log lying on its side?
Sorry, but that is one tiny picture. [edit] I mean one tiny and one small picture! Regards, Matt

Ian,
your point is well taken and should be heeded by those who endevour to purchase ar collect trees. While at a native american demonstration I saw what appeared to be living branches on the framework to the coral entry and comming out on top of the wigwams where the poles were lashed togather. Assuming that they had some significance, I asked one of the wigwam builders and he laughed and said that the trees were felled last fall with no foliage and how was he supposed to know that they would have enough sap in them to sprout in the spring. Something to think about !!!! Regards, Jonathan
