California Juniper: Second Styling???
This California juniper is about 10 years in the pot. It was dug in the jawbone canyon area in Mojave. Tree is about 60/80 years old. It had come to be that the deadwood portion of the modeling was going along pretty well. The problem was that the foliage was growing straight up and had become a problem to me. The plant was just not performing as planned.
The plant has sat with the wire on and had become fairly scarred. the wire has been removed three months ago and some of the wire is still burried in places that I can't get to. It will have to stay, since the tree just grew right over the wire. Fertilizing heavily last year and this year had put on much new growth. Looking at the tree in an upright position was just not doing it for me. I began looking for alternatives. When the trunk was cleaned of the branching that could not be used, the trunk became more ugly. The straight portion of the lower trunk looked funny against the curving large jin area. The jin area is the focal portion of the tree, and something would have to be done to help conceal the lower trunk while acccentuating the jinned trunk.

What I decided to do was to heavily slant the trunk to the left and make a Han-kengai from the tree. The jinned trunk now moves in a flowing direction with the foliage and the straight portion of the trunk seems less noticable. The apex of the jin now poiints skyward while the live apex points in the same direction.
In the previous position the jin was nearly horizontal and was always going to seem disconnected from the live portion. The final shot is a virtual of one possibility in the near future. Any other ideas? ak

Great work Al. Wish we had junipers like that to collect down here.

great vision AK, I really love where youre going with this tree. Just the pot doesnt look right to me. The tree feels a bit off balance with the narrow, deep pot.

Mr. Al,
Beautiful material...I really like what you have done with the new planting angle...This does help to eliminate some of the heaviness I am feeling in the trunk...I would humbly suggest carving the deadwood to 'lighten' it even more...One can never be certain from a photo, but it appears there is a somewhat hollow area [marked in red]...If not I would carve it to hollow it, and if it is I would make that deeper...I would then extend this hollow area upward to the tip as indicated in pale blue or grey [can't really tell on my screen]...This would also allow you to remove a considerable amount of the deadwood at the inside of the curve[black], thereby giving the whole image a more light appearance with the added bonus of creating some additional taper to the main trunk... As you know I am not really fond of the triangular canopy on my own trees, but I do still appreciate one that is well done...I think what you have proposed as a future canopy shape will work very well with this tree...It will in my opinion look like a bonsai, and that is intended as a compliment... I love your choice of pot for the tree, and think if the overall image of the tree were lighter the pot would compliment it even more... I would certainly welcome your thoughts on my vision of the tree...Perhaps by discussing this we can both learn, and help others to learn also... Regards Behr PS...I do hope you don't turn this tree into one of them 'Han-kengai' things...Whatever that is...I believe it will look better as a tree... ![]()
