I had the opportunity to collect this yesterday. Unlike the other two I've collected, this was growing in the ground, not on a rock (at least not a single large piece of rock).
This was growing under a slightly larger juniper. At the base it was starting to fuse to the other.
This took about an hour to dig. If you could call it digging. I was more like remove a piece of rock, loosen and remove the next. The height was reduced about 50%. Then another reduction today. Time to let it recover.
The possition in the pot is temporary, till it recovers, as I've not yet decided wether it will be cascade, windswept or informal upright. Opposite sides show different trees to me. I think I'll have a few years to decide.

I now understand what I was told about roots on the other two .

As always, thoughts and comments are desired.

I like the view in 449, look through BonsaiAl's articles and threads, he has a bunch of tips for these.

If you have or can get ahold of Nick Lenz' book Bonsai from the wild he has a section in there, written for my neck of the woods, but he gets some in depth, I think it would be of value.

Good luck, if it makes it you should be able to find a nice tree in there.

Thank you Bill for reminding me of Al's articles. I've spent some time rereading those. They are full of info.

The Nick Lenz book has been on the wish list for a while now. May be getting it this month.

Thanks

Edd
