Bordering on insanity

A landscaper nearby offered us the opportunity to collect two yard Japanese black pines that were scheduled for the chainsaw. These are the pictures sent to me.....looked do-able eh?

The second one above nearly jumped out of the ground on its own. The first one, however, turned out to be MUCH bigger than I thought. It took me five hours to dig that puppy out. I recovered a rootball that was three feet wide, and two feet deep. After cutting two wrist-thick tap roots, my son and I managed to roll the rootball into the truck, and got it out to the nursery an hour later. We set it up, covered it and watered it in, and crawled home to collapse.

Here it is as we started cleaning it up and thinning it out today....First pic with Cindy starting to prune. Second has Chris standing on the base of the trunk.

Here it is after the clean-up....then the base, with Chris again for scale, and the other side.

I have no experience with a JBP this size, but we've given it the best opportunity to survive we could. The rootball is sitting on plastic, and covered with good soil. It was extremely healthy, despite being covered with that $@#* ivy. The weather is ideal, and is predicted to be for some time. It will make a dynamite tree if it survives, but I have no idea what its chances are.

If I try to dig another of this size, I'm not sure what my chances of survival are either. Glad it's done!

That is a monster...never dug anything close to that size! Do you have any plans/ideas for it? Any pics of the other tree? Hope you recover uneventfully,

Dave

Here's the other tree.....not a tough dig, but not a great tree either.

Lightbulb

Brian, only a suggestion. The big trunked one could be used as a 'welcome' tree at the entrance to the nursery.

What are you planning to do with these monsters? Reminds of the old joke, "Where does a 500 pound gorilla sleep?"

Hard to imagine putting that big pine in a pot. Current concept is Ash's idea....use it at the entrance to the nursery.

HOLY...... That is magnificient. Was it for free (other than some sweat equity)? That is one hell of a tree and even better if you saved it from becoming mulch or landfill.
