Wood For Small Phoenix Grafts

This will be a long term project and this is going to be just my first posts. I am always looking for decent wood that may be used to create good phoenix grafts. I think that I have found the material that will allow me to grow my own wood. Look at the pictures and see if you like the material It is rosemairy wood. Here is the front.

Phoenix grafts

Here is the back. I have already started prepairing a groove that will except the shimpaku that I will attach to this wood. One other thing that I want to do is attach the new vein of shimpaku to this wood while it is still on the parent tree and then after I am satisfied that the vein looks natural I will airlayer it off of the parent tree, I may also attach multiple veins depending on the look that I want. I will take pictures and keep you all posted as I progress but again this is long term posibly 3 years.

Last picture until spring

I prepaired the groove up the back of this piece of wood and have attached it to a live shimpaku limb. This long fall growth is ideal for doing this. So for now my my phoenix graft will spend the winter and maby next year growing in the top of its parent tree. I have 5 buds to work with. AS they grow I will prune them and wire them for shape and placement so that when I airlayer this graft off of the parent it will go directly into a bonsai container. here is the picture

I very much like the branch/dead wood. Are you intending to bleach the wood or keep it it's natural colour. I need to like the natural colour of this wood.

very nice piece of wood rips. i also am about to embark on some pheonix grafts on timber that i have collected. one piece will be almost a lifelong project as it stands about 4 feet tall!!! I am hoping that one day it wil become my signature tree . good luck. I would be interested to hear others opinions about pheonix grafts and their place in bonsai as i had a discussion on another forum with somebody who steadfastly claimed that they were "not real bonsai"

Thumbs up Excellent Wood!!!

Hello there! You have an excellent piece of wood, i am sure you will do a marvelous work. Even though there can be people that do not agree with this type of bonsai, I do think it is just another expession of this art, so go ahead, and keep us informed with pictures.

But i have a question: How do you plan to wor this? I see you have attached the Shimpaku to the wood, so, Are you going to leave the wood with the plant, ora are you planning to airlayering the plant in the wood?

Thanks,
Jorge Joel...

I am anxious to hear how you answer Jorge Joel...

I have created a few Phoenix grafts, and I enjoy the look. I usually work with a young tree, even a Shimpaku whip. I know Ron Martin sells them and they are much better to work with than trying to air layer one off the tree, as I think is your final procedure.

Here is a Water Jasmine that I am growing wild with a piece of Grape Vine wood.
