I believe it is less than 5 inches.
One note: make sure that when you make the grooves, that the inside is larger than the edges. In other words under cut. That way when the branch or trunk grows larger it cannot pop out of the groove. Cross section: / (_) \

Is the wood actually "planted" into the pot/soil? If so, is it treated so that it does not rot where it contacts the soil (or wick up moisture from out of the soil)? Thanx! |

Hello Phil_Man! I do not know much about this types of Bonsai, I am just starting with Phoenix, but wha I have done is treat the dead-wood with sulphur and then stained it. The wood I have used I have plece it just over the surface, so it deos touch the soil. I do not really know if what i have done is correct, but, maybe Carl or another member can help us.
See you, Jorge Joel... Emilia's Garden |

In September 2000, I attended Ron Martin's Bonsai festival, and there was a demonstration of two well known Bonsaist (maybe Ron could fill in the names). In both cases the wood was wired into the pot. In one instance the demonstrater used three eye screws. These were attached to the dead wood amd then wired from the eye hook through the drainage holes in the pots. Obviously, the wood was in the soil. In fact it was mentioned that the wood would rot over time.
I used the same method, however, I used Min-wood hardener on the wood, which should be applied out doors, and then throw the brush away! Of course, I treated several pieces of Tanuki (hopefully)wood at the same time. I hope this helps. ![]()

Rips,
What happened to the rest of that rosemary? With a trunk like that I'm sure you could have turned it into a lovely bonsai with little fuss. -Curious Cody
