Wire Scars - Show your Best!

Matt, thought that was good idea...a thread for wire scars. Here's my contribution. Can anybody beat it? I planted this Mugo in the ground several years ago to let it grow some. I forgot that I had wired it first! Now the wire is in the tree forever after, the tree never ever to be made into a bonsai!

Okay here's my pic and my story

This tree was purchased about 5 years ago and used in one of the beginner workshops where we supply the wire and material.

Afterwards it sat tucked in the corner of the growing grounds. The foliage rapidly filled in and hid the wire, and this was the result, uncovered when I did some cleanup and pruning.

All the wire came out. I was more curious whether it would survive the wire extraction than how it might look later.

You'll note a lot of swelling around the wire scars. This is a technique that is actually used sometimes in field grown pines to build up some thickness right in the lower trunk.

Regards,

Matt

Looks like they both have pretty good character to me. There not that bad. Over time these could be focal points.

lt might be hard to see in the photo, but the wire scar area in my picture is about 50% wider than the trunk beneath. The photo was mainly for the scars, so I didn't pick up the root base.

Not much choice now except to scar the bottom, too, I guess!

Regards,

Matt

Last April I wired an Acer palmatum to initiate some movement in the trunk. The diameter of the trunk was approx. 1/2 inch. I neglected to watch it closely and by the middle of June it was scarred quite badly. I was amazed at how quickly that occurred.

Yes it is easy to spoil a maple with wire. They have thin bark that can scar badly. Azalea too, but they grow much slower.

Regards,

Matt

Accident !

Here is my contribution to this thread.

This is a large spruce that was wired two years ago. The wire was left on to hold down a long since removed branch - and had left a coil under the bark - the swelling caught my eye and I was just able to dig it out.

As the potensai was too tall anyway, it has had a great effect of thickening the trunk!!! and I have now air-layered just below this point. Are now looking forward to potting up next season.
