mintastic, all you need to do is prune off the 'c' and 's' and wait for a new 'k' and 'z' to grow in the correct places...

Hey Min, sorry for the bad joke.
Getting back on topic, in the May 99 issueof "The art of bonsai magazine" there is an article on growing unusual bonsai. A lot of '"The art of Bonsai" articles are now on the net, here is a link to Unusual Bonsai In particular I like the idea of the fallen cone/hundred tree. Basically this consists of a big bunch of seeds all left to germinate close together (but if you followed the link you will know that!). I intend to try the idea next spring with a wide variety of seeds. Rowan, Beech, Blackthorn, Hawthorn and birch all germinate fairly easily, and are indigeneous. Just for fun I tried the horse chestnuts last spring. It worked, sort of, although horse chestnuts are obviously rather coarse for small forests. It did get my 8 year old son briefly away from the nintendo as he kept watching out for new shoots. Regards,

When I run out of things to do with my bonsai and other hobbies, I just walk around to all my larger trees and take some cuttings. Preparing the soil, watering, putting the rooting hormones on, etc etc.. all takes quite a bit of time.
Of course I'm running out of backyard space.. I started with 2 willow cuttings a month ago, and an azalia, and now I'm up to about 30 willows and 30 azalia cuttings, plus misc other plants I keep buying at the local nurseries. You know you're addicted when a major factor in choosing where to live is now how much yard space you will have.
