Hello,

I am preparing to take photos of possible potensai for some advise.
So here are my questions.

How far away should one stand from the tree?-I am thinking that the tree itself should fill almost all of the picture space when looking thru the sights,or would this be too close for viewing branches?

Will black cardboard be ok for a background or would white or another color be better?

you can try it that way, but remember you will need to reduce the pic down in order to post it here, and depending on what size megapixel camera your using, especially if it's a large number, you may lose a lot of the picture to get it down to the right posting size. Better to try a few different distances and see which one will work the best.

Either color should work, just watch out for shadows.

Many people use black velvet as a backdrop because it "absorbs" the shadows and provides a cleaner view of the tree. The cardboard may reflect light and provide an unwanted glare in your photo if you use flash. You can also set-up with several lights and play with them until the shadows are minimal.

Another tip: The angle of view should not be too high. Try not to show the back rim of the pot.
