Tool Storage
A quick question, over the past six or so years that I have been practicing the art of bonsai, I have amassed a collection of tools that typically grow legs and move to different locations of the house during the night.
I have looked into tool storage options for tools and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations. I have been thinking about a tool roll (canvas or leather) but the number of storage pocets are limited and it would be nice to keep everything in one place. Also, would there be a moisture problem with either of these materials since both can retain moisture (be damp for periods of time)? I guess the other option is a metal or plastic box of some type, but this seems extreme.... Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks, Brian |

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME
|
Brian, Hello!
I use a soft, canvas like material, tool bag. The top opens wide and there are several pockets inside for individual tools. They sell these at the big boxes.. Home Depot, Lowes the Marts etc. I have also seen a cloth/canvas type insert/cover for 5 gallon buckets. These have all kinds of pockets on the outside... I'm sure there are others..... Jay

The rolls are mainly for carrying your tools around while you work I would think but I use an old cigar box for mine. I would like to have a tool belt for mine too!

Sometimes a large plastic fishing tackle box is just the right thing. Plastic being softer that metal won't hurt the tools if they slide around a bit. Most tackle boxes, by the way, are water proof. Helps with the rust problem.

Brian:
I keep my best tools in a leather roll up pouch that has several compartments. Since I travel to a nursery almost every day to take care of other bonsai I also cary a 5 gal. bucket with a "Bucket Seat" lid. That way I can sit down from time to time ( I'm getting old and can't stand for long periods of time anymore). I also have a plastic tool box that I cary some home made tools in like root hooks and chop sticks, plant labels, grease pencil, root scissors and a whole bunch of other stuff. The leather roll goes inside the bucket with some rags, rubber gloves, fertilizers etc. If I were just doing this around the house I would use a 5 gal. bucket with the canvas insert to hold everything. I have one of them for regular tools and it is great. Saves a lot of trips back and forth to the work shop.

Tool rolls are great for protecting cutting edges. Most tools have machined surfaces that are thin, sharp and heat treated, so they can be brittle if they get knocked around. The Bucket Boss is a cool idea for storing a lot of tools and you can even put wire rolls in the center. You could do soil, but I find it tends to fall in the pockets.
![]() Tool rolls are available in Nylon, Leather and Canvas. TreeBay carries the Nylon and Suede leather styles. Leather gives a bit more protection against knocks and moisture absorption. Nylon is a bit more economical and easy to clean. Canvas is your least expensive option, they are usually inexpensive but wear more and don't stay very clean looking. ![]() Regards, Matt

If I'm not mistaking the canvas bags/boxes that Jay talks about from Home Depo are sold as electricians cadys and work great. They sell for about $14. I even use the bottom compartmemt for carving tools . The set of Flexcut tools in the wooden box fit perfectly.
Regards, Jonathan
